when a credit card won't swipe

When a credit card won’t swipe it’s important to follow the 3 simple steps below to avoid incurring costly chargebacks.

  1. Take a manual imprint of the card by using an imprinter machine with an imprinting plate that has your merchant identification number embossed on it.
  2. Manually key-in the transaction through your terminal or POS system. Record the 6 digit approval code onto the imprinter slip from step 1 above. If your terminal is not functional, you can attempt to obtain an approval code by performing a voice authorization.
  3. Have the customer sign the imprinter slip from step 1 and ensure the signature on the back of the card matches the signature on the slip. Give the carbon copy of the imprinted slip to the cardholder and save the original for your records.
